The Illustraciència International Illustration Award 2025 celebrates excellence in scientific and naturalist illustration. Organized by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in collaboration with the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC) and the Catalan Association of Science Communication (ACCC), this prestigious award aims to highlight the importance of visual storytelling in science communication. Through this initiative, the competition fosters the growth of scientific illustration as a powerful educational tool, helping to bridge the gap between scientific research and the general public. By recognizing and promoting high-quality, scientifically accurate illustrations, the competition underscores the role of art in making complex concepts accessible and engaging.
Each year, the Illustraciència Award attracts talented illustrators from around the world who specialize in depicting biological diversity, ecosystems, anatomy, and other scientific subjects with precision and artistic excellence. The competition is open to both individuals and teams aged 18 and above, welcoming submissions from professional illustrators, researchers, students, and hobbyists. Artists can submit detailed, hand-drawn or digital illustrations that align with either the Scientific Illustration category, focusing on technical accuracy, or the Naturalist Illustration category, which emphasizes aesthetic beauty and artistic representation. With a commitment to fostering the next generation of science communicators, the initiative encourages participation from a diverse array of backgrounds and disciplines.
The Illustraciència Award 2025 not only offers recognition but also provides a platform for winners and finalists to gain international visibility. Selected works are showcased in exhibitions, online galleries, and educational initiatives, reaching audiences across academia, museums, and scientific institutions. The competition also promotes networking opportunities within the scientific illustration community, allowing participants to connect with researchers, publishers, and industry professionals. By advancing the role of scientific and nature illustration in global science communication, Illustraciència continues to shape the field, inspiring both emerging and established artists to contribute their skills to the world of science.
