The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, now in its illustrious 17th year, stands as a beacon of excellence within the realm of contemporary portrait photography. This esteemed international competition, hosted by the National Portrait Gallery, celebrates the art of capturing the essence of humanity through the lens. It not only showcases the talents of young, emerging photographers but also honors the contributions of gifted amateurs and the unparalleled skill of established professionals. The prize is synonymous with diversity and creativity, offering a panoramic view of modern society through portraits that range from meticulously planned commissions to the spontaneous intimacy of shots capturing friends and family in moments of unguarded emotion.

The competition’s allure lies in its broad interpretation of the portrait genre, urging participants to explore the depth of individual identity in their submissions. This inclusive approach encourages a wide array of photographic styles, from traditional to avant-garde, each telling its unique story. With the annual In Focus display, the Prize also offers a spotlight to established photographers, presenting new work that pushes the boundaries of portrait photography even further. The 2024 edition is particularly special as it unveils new work for the Gallery’s Collection, commissioned from Serena Brown, the 2023 commission prize winner, thus continuing to enrich the cultural tapestry of contemporary photography.

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize not only provides a platform for the world’s most exciting and innovative portrait photography but also acts as a crucible for emerging talent, offering significant exposure and the opportunity to be featured alongside the best in the field. Its significance extends beyond the realm of photography, serving as a mirror to the societal, cultural, and personal narratives that shape our world. As such, the Prize is a highlight on the international art calendar, attracting entries from across the globe and drawing visitors to London to experience this showcase of human stories, captured through the photographer’s eye.

The entry fee for the competition is £22 per image, but there are provisions for free entries for photographers on Universal Credit or Pension Credit, and discounts for those on Disability Benefits, students, or photographers aged between 18 and 25.
