The SPIE International Day of Light Photo Contest 2025 is an annual global photography competition organized by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, in celebration of UNESCO’s International Day of Light. The contest invites photographers from around the world, both amateur and professional, to submit visually compelling images that vividly showcase the profound influence of light and photonics on cultural, economic, technological, and societal aspects of human life. By highlighting creative and impactful photography, SPIE aims to increase public awareness about the essential role that light-based technologies play in everyday life, from healthcare innovations and renewable energy solutions to telecommunications and cultural heritage preservation.
Participants are encouraged to submit original photographs that capture innovative and imaginative perspectives on the theme of light, illustrating its versatility, beauty, and critical importance. The submissions typically cover diverse areas including science, technology, art, education, and culture, reflecting how light impacts various sectors globally. Entrants have the opportunity to demonstrate their technical skills, artistic creativity, and unique interpretations of how light shapes our world, thereby promoting broader engagement with scientific concepts through visual storytelling.
Through this contest, SPIE not only recognizes and rewards outstanding photographic talent but also promotes greater appreciation for the field of optics and photonics. Winning photographs will be featured prominently in SPIE’s promotional activities and exhibitions, providing photographers with international exposure and the chance to have their work seen by leading experts, industry leaders, and the general public. The SPIE International Day of Light Photo Contest thus serves as a platform for photographers worldwide to contribute meaningfully to global conversations around science education, sustainability, innovation, and the integral role of light in enhancing quality of life.
