This year’s theme invites participants to delve into the myriad ways life on Earth evolves and adapts in response to environmental shifts, human impacts, and the forward march of scientific progress. Through the lens of their cameras, contestants are encouraged to explore the resilience of life forms ranging from microscopic organisms to the grandeur of megafauna, showcasing the beauty and complexity of ecosystems, biodiversity, and the intricate dance between species and their habitats.

Entrants are called upon to present visual narratives that not only highlight the beauty and complexity of life but also reflect on humanity’s profound impact on the natural world. This includes documenting the transformative power of scientific innovation in biosciences, from climate change mitigation efforts to the creation of new habitats that foster biodiversity. The competition aims to elevate awareness and provoke thoughtful discussion on the pivotal role humans play in shaping the biosphere, emphasizing the importance of sustainable interaction with our environment. It’s a unique platform that marries the art of photography with the science of biology, inviting a broad audience to engage with critical environmental and ecological issues through captivating imagery.

The Royal Society of Biology aims to harness the power of visual storytelling to illuminate the changes occurring within the natural world and the innovative strides in scientific research that seek to address these challenges. By casting a spotlight on the adaptability and resilience of life in the face of adversity, the competition serves as a compelling call to action for conservation and a celebration of the planet’s biodiversity. It stands as a testament to the critical role of art and science in fostering a deeper understanding of our world, making it an essential endeavor for anyone passionate about photography, biology, and environmental conservation.
