The International Wildbird Photo Competition, part of the Bird and Nature Festival, has gained international recognition since its inception in 1991. Held annually in Abbeville, France, the competition celebrates the beauty of wild birds through the art of photography. It invites amateur and professional photographers from around the world to participate, providing a platform for showcasing the diversity and majesty of bird species in their natural environments. The competition features six categories: Bird Portrait, Bird in its Environment, Bird Behavior, Bird in Flight, Artistic Vision of Birds, and a category for Other Flying Species, such as insects and bats. This allows photographers to explore various artistic approaches while capturing the essence of these remarkable creatures.
Each participant is allowed to submit up to 15 images, either across several categories or concentrated within one. The competition places a strong emphasis on creativity and originality, encouraging photographers to portray birds in their habitat or in flight, as well as highlight their unique behaviors. Special attention is given to ethical photography, ensuring that images respect wildlife and their environments. This contest is part of a broader initiative to promote environmental awareness through art, providing a vivid window into the world of birds and their significance in both natural and urban settings.
The Bird and Nature Festival, which hosts the competition, runs for nine days each April, featuring the award ceremony alongside a wide range of events and activities dedicated to nature lovers. The winning photographs are showcased during this festival, drawing thousands of visitors who vote for their favorite entries. This combination of artistic expression and environmental education makes the International Wildbird Photo Competition one of the most highly anticipated wildlife photography events in Europe. Participants have the chance to win substantial cash prizes, and their work gains exposure through both the festival and its associated exhibitions.
