The Book Illustration Competition is a unique partnership between House of Illustration and The Folio Society that seeks to identify and promote new talent in illustration.

Each year entrants are asked to submit three illustrations and a binding design for a book chosen by The Folio Society. The book to be illustrated this year is The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. You will need to read and provide one illustration for each of the following stories for your entry.

    • A Scandal in Bohemia
    • The Man with the Twisted Lip
    • The Musgrave Ritual

You can download a PDF of these three stories here.

All images need to be at least 900 pixels wide on all sides. Each individual image must be no larger than 2MB. Submit a set of your illustrations at 150 dpi, RGB, jpeg (jpeg setting 8). If you are longlisted, you'll be contacted for the master artwork. Master artwork must be 300 dpi CMYK TIF files.

You can use any medium that is suitable for reproduction. Illustrations may be in colour or black and white. All images must be portrait. Only one entry per person is allowed.

Entry fee is 25 GBP (approx. 33 USD), or 15 GBP (approx. 20 USD) for students.

    Eligibility

Open worldwide to illustrators over the age of 18, both student and professional, who have not been previously published by The Folio Society.

    Prize

The winner receives a highly sought-after commission, worth 5,000 GBP (approx. 6,760 USD), to complete a total of nine illustrations and a binding design for the book, which is then published by The Folio Society. Five runners each receive 500 GBP (approx. 676 USD) cash.

The shortlist and overall winner will be announced at the Awards Night on Tuesday 20 February 2018 at House of Illustration.
