780 million people still have no regular access to clean water, and 2.6 billion have no access to basic sanitation. With rapid population growth, climate change and the naturally unequal distribution of water, rainwater harvesting is an alternate ‐ and effective ‐ way of increasing the availability of water while also reducing the risk of flooding. Rainwater harvesting can decrease the impulsive and wasteful use of water by individuals and businesses alike. It has the double benefit of preserving natural resources while helping to mitigate against climate change.

The International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance (IRHA), ever concerned with highlighting the benefits of rainwater harvesting, is launching the fourth edition of its international competition that links art to development. Rainwater harvesting has been used to provide a supply of safe and sustainable water for centuries, but in recent generations, it has been forgotten. Through this competition we aim to reintroduce this concept and make the public aware of the various advantages that rainwater harvesting offers.

It is in this context that the IRHA invites artists - professional and amateur alike - to create a poster that presents their vision on the benefits that this resource can have for both humans and nature.

Posters can cover any aspect of rainwater harvesting, for example: domestic use, groundwater recharge, agriculture, or risk reduction. The artist should keep in mind that the aim of the competition is to make the general public aware that rainwater can be (and is!) an essential resource.

The poster must be remarkably good quality to enable printing up to A0 size (841 x 1189mm), with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Its format can be jpeg, pdf, indd, eps or ai. There is a limit of three posters per participant. Posters can be both horizontal (landscape orientation) and vertical (portrait orientation).

    There is no entry fee.

The competition is open to all who wish to participate, without reference to age, nationality or profession.

The creator of the winning poster will be awarded CHF1000 (approx. 1,080 USD). The second place poster will receive CHF600 and third place CHF400.

The best posters will also be used to help us in our important task of promoting the use of rainwater harvesting around the world. This will include exhibitions in the Geneva area and further afield, as well as on our printed media and website.
